GENERAL INFORMATION
NEOHEL is organizing
for 2007 the program“
Asterias Travels” in
Aegina, a beautiful pine covered island and one of the closest to the city
of Athens. Aegina is an island with rich cultural heritage,
archaeological sites, medieval and Byzantine monuments, natural sites,
beaches, and picturesque villages. Children will have the opportunity to
experience a unique Greek summer and at the same time they will improve their Greek and their knowledge
of the Greek history in reference to the historical elements that are
present on the island
of Aegina.
“Asterias Travels” will
take place in the very pleasant environment of a 3-star hotel “Nafsika”
located in the Kolona at a 10-minute walking distance from the Town and the
port of Aegina. The rooms have private baths, TV, AC, and refrigerator. The
hotel has a safe proved pool and the beach which is at a 5-minute walking
distance, was the secret ancient port where the people of Aegina
used to hide their fleet from the enemies, next to the Apollo’s Column. The
beach is at a walking distance from the hotel and the nearby picturesque
taverns, where the children will have dinner, offer good quality food
(fresh fish, traditional octopus, calamari and so forth). The Town of Aegina has a long
promenade full of patisseries with local sweets, such as loukoumades and
nut caramels. Playgrounds and horse cart rides will be a pleasure for the
children. The Town has to offer 4 open air movie theaters that often show
movies for children (all subtitled). The
children will also have the opportunity to visit some of the most
significant sites from various periods of the Greek history.
Our philosophy is to
create a summer school that promotes not only the Greek language but also
the culture, the art, and the history through personal and hands-on
experiences. The program “Asterias Travels” aims at introducing to children
the language as part of the history of the island covering various
historical periods such as Neolithic (temple of Apollo in the Kolona),
Classical (temple of Aphaea Athena and temple of Apollo), Byzantine
(Paliachora medieval town) and Modern (Kapodistrian first Greek government
and art building). In addition, the students will be exposed to ecological
elements of the island, such as the Wildlife
Hospital and the unique vegetation
of the island (Aegina is a unique origin
producer of nuts recognized as such by the EU). The teaching methods used
focus on interactive communication, games, role playing, and other fun
activities that make learning enjoyable and at the same time efficient and
productive. Finally, the students will be awarded for team work, excellent
work, and good manners.

about the organizers and their teaching staff, as well as other courses and
seminars that NEOHEL offers, please advise the last section of the present
document, “About NEOHEL.”
