SEMINARS OF THE GREEK LANGUAGE - Summer 2007
Location: Hotel Nafsica on the island of Aigina
C2. FAMILY VACATIONS & SEMINARS OF GREEK AS A SECOND OR FOREIGN
LANGUAGE FOR
CHILDREN AND PARENTS
General Information
NEOHEL* is organizing a two-week seminar between
July 22 and August 3, 2007 or a three-week seminar from July 22 till August 10, 2007 in
Aegina, a beautiful island not far from Athens. It will be a program of
teaching children the Greek language and culture in two levels. This
program was created following several parents’ suggestion who desired their
children to be familiar with their heritage language and culture. This
program is addressed equally to people who wish to learn Greek and admire
the language and civilization. All participating children must be
accompanied by a parent or an adult responsible for them. Accompanying
adults may benefit as well by participating in separate seminars of various
levels. That way they can improve their Greek at the same time as the
children.
While in Aegina, adults and
children will experience a unique Greek summer and at the same time they
will have the opportunity to improve or even start their Greek while in
class or while exploring the life in the island, by listening to Greek, by
speaking Greek for their everyday encounters.
Children’s Aegina
The island
of Aegina is an ideal
location for family vacation. The hotel where the seminar is organized is
in the area of Apollo’s Column – less than a kilometer away from the Town
of Aegina.
The beach is at a walking distance from the hotel and the nearby
picturesque taverns offer good quality food (fresh fish, traditional
octopus) in very competitive prices. The Town of Aegina
has a long promenade with patisseries with local sweets, such as loukoumades and nut caramels (Aegina
is a unique origin producer of nuts recognized as such by the EU).
Playgrounds and horse rides will be a pleasure for the children. The Town
has to offer 4 open air movie theaters that often show movies for children
(all subtitled). The Aphaea Athena temple not far
of the Town is one of the most important archaeological sites that children
must see in the island, as well as a number of churches and traditional
villages.
Hotel
The seminar will take place in the very relaxing environment of the
3-star hotel “Nafsika.” As mentioned just above,
the hotel is at a 10-minute walking distance from the Town and the port of Aegina. The rooms have private
baths, TV, AC, and refrigerator. The hotel has a pool and the beach is at a
5-minute walking distance.
Levels of Competency
1st level
The 1st level will include 40
teaching hours (of 50 minutes) from Monday to Friday and will be addressed
to children with little or no experience in Greek. Through singing, arts,
theatrical games, colored pictures, and the imaginary world of the “Letterheroes” children will develop their oral, reading
and writing skills, through fun activities. The notion of learning through
playing is going to be fully applied in this level.
2nd level
The 2nd level will include 40
teaching hours (of 50 minutes) from Monday to Friday and will be addressed
to children with some knowledge of the Greek language who want to improve
their oral as well as their reading and writing skills regarding topics of
their interest.
With the exception of purely linguistic
issues, Modern Greek culture and way of life, Greek music and songs, Greek
traditions and customs, will be among the other topics that will be
introduced to the children as well as Greek dances.
Adult levels
These levels will include 40 teaching
hours (of 50 minutes) from Monday to Friday and are addressed to adults who
accompany the children and wish to begin or improve their Greek language
skills. Adults who are interested in these classes should refer to B1
program.
Further arrangements (optional)
Greek Dance Lessons
During the second and the third week of
the seminar the students will have the option to follow Greek dance
lessons.
Ancient Theater of Epidaurus
On July there will be an excursion by boat
and bus to the ancient theater of Epidaurus. Performances are taking place
every summer in Epidaurus
on a daily basis. The students will have the chance to analyze the specific
comedy or tragedy that they will watch beforehand during the seminar.
Visit of the Temple
of Aphaea Athena Apollo’s
ruins & archaeological museum
The temple
of Aphaea Athena
in Aegina is one of the best preserved
Doric style temples of the 5th century BC. The temple has been
used as prototype for the construction of the Parthenon in Athens
and along with the temple of Poseidon in Sounion
they create a holy triangle (Aegina – Athens
– Sounion).
Visit of the Museum
of Sculptor C. Kapralos
