By incorporating both scholarly/didactic approaches to learning with experiential approaches(e.g., field trips, observational learning) based on the rich resources of the country of Greece, this course will be an important part of a process in which the students learn about the way Greek civilization and culture shaped the way we see and experience the world and ourselves.

Syllabus & Training Material

The Academic Odyssey to Greece will begin in Athens, Greece, the cradle of western art, philosophy, and western democratic ideals. The contrast between the ancient and contemporary and boisterous Mediterranean metropolis will provide a backdrop for an intellectual exploration of the classical past. The program will lead to the island of Aegina, the Peloponnese (Nafplion, Epidavros, Mycenes) and also to the islands of Hydra and Aghistri. The sites of Greece will become the “classroom” for discovering the remnants of the contextual histories in which Hellenistic ideals emerged from ancient Greece. This course will integrate seminar discussions and readings with sites of antiquity and modern Greece using reflection, insights and interpretation as vehicles for examining ancient ideals and virtues and their connection to issues in modern society such as education, the arts and sports. This course will also introduce and familiarize students with contemporary Greece, its culture and language through formal and informal instruction.
